eBay saved searches vs a profit-aware alert
Last checked
If you resell on Amazon what you buy on eBay, you probably already use saved searches. They are built into eBay and work for plenty of buyers. This page covers what they do well, where resellers run into limits, and how a profit-aware alert like MarginPing fits next to them. We build MarginPing, so we say so up front, and we suggest using both.
Short answer
Keep your saved searches. They come with your eBay account and cover anything you can type into a search box. A saved search tells you a listing exists. It does not tell you whether that listing clears your profit line on Amazon, and that is the gap a profit-aware alert fills.
What saved searches do well
- They come with your eBay account. Nothing to install, and eBay's help page, as read on 2026-10-28, lists no charge for them.
- They cover any keyword. A product, a brand, a part number or a loose phrase. MarginPing needs your product list to start; a saved search needs only words.
- They suit discovery. If you do not yet know which products to target, browsing results and saving a few searches is a good way to learn.
Where they fall short for resellers
Timing is not stated. Per eBay's help page on 2026-10-28, you create saved searches for items you regularly search for, and eBay sends email alerts when new matching items are listed. The page does not say how often the emails go out. We do not repeat user reports about timing, because they are not eBay policy. Test it yourself with a search you know will produce new listings.
There is no Amazon price and no fee math. A saved search matches words. It cannot tell you that a listing is a bare tool when your ASIN is a kit, or that a cheaper result is the older generation. You do the lookup and the math by hand for every result.
Keywords are loose. Depending on how sellers word their titles, a saved search for a model number can also return accessories, parts-only units and lookalikes. With a large catalog, that noise adds up.
Side by side
| eBay saved searches | MarginPing | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No charge listed on eBay's help page | Not published yet; MarginPing is pre-launch |
| Starts from | A keyword you type | The products you already sell on Amazon |
| Alert channel | Email, and the Saved feed on eBay | Telegram message on your phone |
| Alert timing | Not stated on eBay's help page | No promised time; each alert shows when the listing appeared and when it was sent |
| Amazon price and fees | Not part of a keyword search | In every alert |
| Profit estimate | Not part of a keyword search | In every alert, with a green or amber flag and a word against your minimum |
| Match to your exact item | Keyword only | Model number and UPC, kit versus bare tool, lot size, with a confidence score |
| Buys for you | No | No, you buy by hand |
Use both
- Keep saved searches for broad discovery and for products outside your catalog.
- Use a profit-aware watcher for the products you already sell, where the Amazon math decides whether a listing deserves a look.
- At the end of each month, compare what each one caught. Your own results beat any claim on a web page, ours included.
MarginPing starts with power tools and tool kits, and it is in final testing, not open for signups yet. See power tools for what an alert will show.
How to set up a saved search well
- Search by model number, not description. Save the exact number, then a second search for the number without the dash or ending, since sellers write it both ways.
- Sort by newly listed so fresh listings come first.
- Turn on email alerts for each search, and check that eBay has your current email address.
- Check your spam folder and mail filters. A forgotten filter can send eBay emails to a folder you never open.
- Review your list monthly. Delete searches that never produce something you act on.
Editing a saved search creates a new saved search with the new filters, per eBay's help page on 2026-10-28, so tidy up the old one after you edit. For the full method from listing to profit, see how to check whether an eBay listing clears your profit line on Amazon.
Questions
Why is my eBay saved search email late or missing?
We cannot see inside eBay's systems, so we cannot say. Check your spam folder and mail filters first, then check that email alerts are turned on for that search.
How often does eBay send saved search emails?
eBay's help page, as read on 2026-10-28, does not say. Test with a search you know will produce new listings.
Can I get eBay new listing alerts on my phone?
eBay's help page describes email alerts and the Saved feed. MarginPing will send Telegram messages, which arrive as push notifications on your phone, for the products on your own list.
Does MarginPing replace saved searches?
No. It watches the products you already sell. Saved searches stay useful for everything else.
Does MarginPing send alerts by SMS?
No. Alerts go through Telegram, which is free and sends a push notification to your phone. SMS is not planned for launch.
